MCA REPORTS THIRTEEN POSITIVE CASES OF COVID-19

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Community Health Program reports that since Dec. 21, 2020, a total of thirteen (13) new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the northern portion of the community, as of Dec. 31, 2020. This brings the total active cases in MCA’s jurisdiction to thirteen (13), with 53 cases overall since the beginning of the pandemic. Forty cases have been resolved.
Of the thirteen active cases, six (6) are residents of the Tsiionkwanonhso:te Long Term Care Facility.
“COVID-19 continues to threaten our community’s health and safety,” said MCA Grand Chief Abram Benedict. “We urge our community members to be on alert and to be vigilant in all safety precautions, including social distancing from anyone outside your household. Our elderly and vulnerable community members depend on all of us to help keep them safe. We send our thoughts for a speedy recovery to our Tsiionkwanonhso:te residents and community members who are battling the virus, and we thank our health professionals for their continued dedication to keeping Akwesasne safe.”
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe reports that there are 14 new cases of COVID-19 in the southern portion of the community. The total active cases in Akwesasne, northern and southern jurisdictions, is now 27.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne falls within the jurisdiction of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit and therefore the province-wide shutdown and restriction on social gatherings to be contained to only those within your household applies in Akwesasne. Please postpone your gatherings and remain vigilant in practicing social distancing, mask-wearing, washing of hands, and staying away from others when sick. MCA’s curfew remains in place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily.
We wish to thank and recognize the community for their continued ongoing diligence in practicing preventative measures especially the difficult task of social distancing from our friends and family. We will get through this together.
