AMPS REMINDS RESIDENTS TO STAY HOME DURING CURFEW HOURS

In November 2020, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne reinstated the community curfew in accordance with the Akwesasne Emergency Curfew Law. This was due to the increase of COVID-19 cases in the community.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service have been actively enforcing the Akwesasne Emergency Curfew Law and have noticed an increase in traffic during curfew hours. Police have also reported an increase in Dangerous Driving and Failure to Stop for Police (Flight).

Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop for police (flight) are serious criminal offenses that can result in a criminal record, license suspension, vehicle seizure, and fines. Unsafe driving practices can put the community at risk, and can lead to traffic collisions.

The Akwesasne Emergency Curfew is in effect from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Travel for essential purposes only, such as for work, and emergencies. Police are urging residents to remain home during curfew hours.

Police also encourage everyone to wear a mask when around those outside your household, socially distance yourself from others by 6-feet or 2-metres, and wash your hands and clean surfaces regularly. It’s also important that you stay home if you are sick, or have been exposed to COVID-19.
