CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER — NOTICE OF NOMINATION

Notice is hereby given that nominations of the eligible Mohawk members of Akwesasne will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2021, beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for the purpose of nominating candidates for the positions of Grand Chief and District Chiefs for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, for the next ensuing term. There are four District Chiefs for each of the three districts and one position for Grand Chief available. The nominations will be held at the following locations:

Kawehno:ke Recreation Centre 
Kana:takon Recreation Centre 
Tsi Snaihne Recreation Centre 

Elections will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2021. Due to the pandemic, Advance Polls will be held from June 6, 2021 until June 19, 2021 by appointment only. To make an appointment, please contact Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Leona Benedict at 613-551-1622 or 613-575-2250 ext. 2406.  

Please note that any eligible voter may nominate candidates for both Grand Chief and a limit of four District Chief positions. To be considered an Eligible Voter, a person (who at the time of voting) must: 

  • Have attained 18 (eighteen) years of age; 
  • Be a resident in the district where they are voting; 
  • Be a registered member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne; 
  • Be an Onkwehón:we 

Any candidate for the position of Grand Chief or District Chief must: 

  • Have attained 18 (eighteen) years of age; 
  • Have resided in the territory of Akwesasne for one year immediately preceding the date of election 
  • Be a registered member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne; 
  • Be an Onkwehón:we 
  • Be nominated for the position by at least two person eligible to vote for that person; and 
  • Not be a CEO, DEO, USP, or Appointed Observer at contemplated in this Election Law
