MCA MAKES STRIDES TOWARD IMMUNITY WITH PFIZER 12 & UP VACCINES

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Department of Health is pleased to provide an update to the community regarding the vaccination roll-out for ages 12 and up.  On May 12, 2021, the MCA Community Health Program began administering the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine to youth ages 12 and up, as one of the first communities across the country to do so. 

 “MCA’s Department of Health was notified that the Pfizer BionTech COVID-19 vaccine was being approved for 12 years of age and up, and we felt it was of the utmost importance to offer it to our community members,” said Acting Director of Health Cindy Francis-Mitchell.   “Vaccinating our community is our path to immunity and we continue to take strides toward ensuring community members have access to the vaccine as quickly as possible, to save lives and protect our most vulnerable.” 

Vaccines are proven to be safe and effective, and protect us from illness and death associated with COVID-19.   

“We are very happy that many young Akwesasronon took the opportunity to receive the vaccine,” said Community Health Manager Lesley Bero, whose program oversees the vaccination clinics and other COVID-19 services.  “Our team takes pride in helping our community members protect their health and the health of their loved ones.” 

The health team worked quickly to modify their scheduled adult Pfizer clinic to accommodate ages 12 and up this past week. A total of 72 Pfizer vaccines were administered on May 12th, including a mix of 12-18 year olds and adults.  Additional clinic dates will be announced.  Due to the logistics of ordering and storing the Pfizer vaccine, pre-registration will continue to be required until further notice.  

The next Pfizer vaccine clinic will be held on Wednesday, May 19th.  If you would like to register, please contact the MCA Community Health Program at 613-575-2341 Ext. 3240.  

Reminder: If you have been advised to self-isolate or have symptoms of COVID-19, please do not attend a vaccine clinic.  The health and safety of our front-line health staff and our community members is a priority.
