MCA & SRMT LIFT BAN ON IN-HOME WAKES
MCA & SRMT JOINT PRESS RELEASE
Effective immediately, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe have lifted the “No Home Wakes” protocol, in response to increasing vaccination rates and decreasing COVID-19 cases in the community.
While home wakes will be permitted in Akwesasne, the MCA’s COVID-19 Guidance – Funeral and Bereavement Services document contains safety protocols and procedures. The MCA and SRMT also advise that there is an ongoing need to practice social distancing and refrain from going out in public when sick. Masks continue to be required in public places indoors. The requirement for wearing of masks outdoors varies based on jurisdiction.
Funeral “packages” which include signage, relevant documents and MCA’s funeral guidelines can be picked up at the Mohawk Government offices in Kana:takon.
The MCA and SRMT thank the community for their adherence to this protocol throughout the past year, which helped to keep our cases of COVID-19 low. We understand the difficulties of losing loved ones during the pandemic and we extend our condolences to all those who are grieving during these trying times.
