CBSA UNION’S “WORK TO RULE” STRIKE CREATING DELAYS AT BORDER

Community members and the travelling public should expect delays and extended wait times at the Cornwall Port of Entry and all U.S. – Canada Ports of Entry across Canada today, due to “Work to Rule” strike action that began this morning, Aug. 6, 2021.  The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), whose members include CBSA border agents, announced that negotiations between PSAC and Canada have been ongoing without any resolution as of yet.   

“Work to Rule” is strike action that directs the employees to reduce their work to the minimum required by contracts.  Delays are expected nationwide as a result.   

The Cornwall Port of Entry confirmed that the Domestic Lane is open and will remain open despite the strike and delays. They are committed to ensuring that traffic can continue to cross, safely and as quickly as possible.  As labour action and negotiations continue, the community is asked to be patient while resolutions are in discussion.   

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne supports the CBSA union’s right to exercise “Work to Rule” but reminds CBSA that the Cornwall Port of Entry is unlike any other Port of Entry. Akwesasne residents are 70 % of the users of the Cornwall Port of Entry and are not regular Canadian travellers.  

MCA is in regular communication with CBSA to keep abreast of updates to the negotiations. The community is advised to plan ahead and expect delays in the meantime.  Please consider rescheduling unnecessary trips to Cornwall for the time being.
