AMS HOLDS ANNUAL TOM LONGBOAT RUN

The Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School held the Tom Longboat Run today, supporting physical activity and friendly competition amongst the students. The race has been held at Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education schools for decades.

 

Tom Longboat was a famous Onondaga distance runner who resided in Six Nations, Ontario. In 1907, he won the Boston Marathon, the first indigenous person to do so. He also competed in the Olympics. In his running days, he was quite well-known, with over 200,000 people attending a celebration event for him in Toronto. Longboat is remembered for his athleticism and determination. As a survivor of residential school, he is also respected for his perseverance. Longboat’s love of running is inspirational.

 

The Tsi Snaihne School will hold their Tom Longboat Run on June 6th at 9 a.m. at their school. Kana:takon School will hold their Tom Longboat Run on June 9th at 9 a.m. at Generations Park.
