Akwesasne Emergency Management Law
The Mohawks of Akwesasne have the right to preserve and promote the health, safety, and welfare of members during emergencies, and to maintain law and order in the Territory.
As the community government within the Territory, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne exercises the inherent jurisdiction to make laws, regulations, and policies to meet the needs and concerns of the Mohawks of Akwesasne.
The Akwesasne Joint Emergency Operations Plan, approved by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne through MCR 2017/2018 – #011 dated April 10, 2017, makes provisions for extraordinary emergency response measures to safeguard the health, safety, welfare, property, environment, and economy of the community in emergency situations.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne wishes to provide comprehensive emergency management, to plan, prepare, respond, and recover from emergencies.
The purpose of the Akwesasne Emergency Management Law is to: protect the health, safety, and welfare of persons within the Territory during a declared State of Emergency; protect the environment and economy within the Territory; implement emergency response measures that are appropriate for Akwesasne; harmonize Akwesasne’s emergency response measures with neighbouring jurisdictions; and provide guidance with respect to the enforcement of emergency orders in Akwesasne.
This law is currently in Phase IV – Law Enactment of the Akwesasne Legislative Enactment Regulation.
September 13, 2023 — The Chief Referendum Officer (CEO) Leona Benedict hereby gives notice of an upcoming referendum on the Final Draft Akwesasne Cannabis Law and Final Draft of the Akwesasne Emergency Management Law.
The Akwesasne Cannabis Law and the Akwesasne Emergency Management Law will only be passed with the approval of the community by referendum.
Polling stations will be set up on Saturday October 21, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the following locations:
District of Kawehno:ke – Tri District Elders Lodge
District of Tsi Snaihne- Tsi Snaihne Recreation Center
District of Kana:takon – Kana:takon Recreation Center
If you are a member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne, as per the Akwesasne Membership Code and your name is on the Referendum Voters List you will be eligible to vote.
