MCA WELCOMES NURSING STUDENTS
Over the years, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Department of Health has welcomed many students looking to pursue a career in healthcare — and this year is no different.
Ohentiioa Lahache-Deering and Jade Gabri have begun working within the community of Akwesasne this month, gaining firsthand experience in indigenous health.
Ohentiioa Lahache-Deering is in her third year of St. Lawrence College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, which is offered in collaboration with Laurentian University. The nursing student is passionate about empowering indigenous people within healthcare and currently sits as the Director of Indigenous Health Advocacy for the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association. Within the coming weeks, you can find Ohentiioa around the community clinics on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Similar to Ohentiioa, Jade Gabri is also passionate about indigenous healthcare and enrolled in the St. Lawrence College-Laurentian University BScN Program, albeit as a fourth-year student. Following in the footsteps of her family of nurses, Jade looks forward to serving the community and will be available Tuesday through Thursday until December.
Both nursing students will be working in all three clinics throughout the northern portion of Akwesasne, providing assistance and upgrading patient care plans. While both Ohentiioa and Jade are no strangers to our community, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to welcome them to the organization and we look forward to the great work they will accomplish while here!
