AKWESASNE NOT IMPACTED BY BORDER RESTRICTIONS

UPDATE ON UNITED STATES/CANADA BORDER CROSSING (March 18, 2020 at 12:05 p.m.)

On Wednesday March 18, 2020 the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of the United States made announcements on new restrictions to their respective borders.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has been in contact with the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) and United States Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) and has been reassured that these new announcements will have no immediate impact to residents of Akwesasne.

The Governments of Canada and United States are asking that border crossings be limited to essential travel. We remind Akwesasne residents that proper identification is required. Residents crossing into Cornwall should use their Certificate of Indian Status (INAC) “status card” in order to cross without delay into Canada.

We will continue to update the community as the information is received.

PREVIOUS BORDER UPDATE – March 16, 2020
On March 16, 2020, the Prime Minister of Canada announced that Canada would take increasingly aggressive steps to limit the spread of the Coronavirus. The Government of Canada announced that beginning Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Canada would no longer allow individuals who are not born in Canada or the United States into the Country of Canada.

This announcement has no impact on the residents of Akwesasne. You will be allowed to continue to cross the Canada – United States international border.

The U.S. Customs Massena Port of Entry has confirmed that they are operating as “status quo” and Akwesasnronon will not be impacted should more stringent border crossing measures be put into place in the future, due to our dual citizenship and their recognition of the Jay Treaty.

We will continue to work with the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) and United States Border Protection (USCBP) to ensure border changes as a result of the Coronavirus have limited impacts on our community.
