AKWESASNE MEMBERSHIP BOARD BY-ELECTION UPDATE
On Saturday, March 8, 2025, the Akwesasne Membership Board By-Election nominations took place at the Kana:takon School and the Iohahi:io Akwesasne Education & Training Institute for the following seats:
• District of Kana:takon: One (1) seat for a four-year term
• District of Tsi Snaihne: One (1) seat for a two-year term
In Tsi Snaihne, one nomination was received, and if the nominee submits a completed package by Friday, March 21, 2025, no later than the 2:00 PM deadline, they will be acclaimed to the position.
Kana:takon received two nominations, and nominees must submit their completed nomination packages by the deadline. If both nominees in Kana:takon meet eligibility requirements for the criteria to run, a by-election will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Kana:takon School from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
If needed, advance polls will be available on Tuesday, April 1, and Wednesday, April 2, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Angus Mitchell Memorial Building, formerly known as the Justice Department building and Canada Post Office site. According to Section 8.2 of the Akwesasne Membership Regulation, eligible voters who are unable to vote on election day due to hospitalization, education, training, employment, travel commitments, or physical incapacity may apply for authorization to vote in the advance poll.
The Chief Electoral Officer advises voters to check the most recent Voter’s Lists, which are posted at the Canada Post Office and Village Currency. If your name does not appear on the Kana:takon Voter’s List dated March 17, 2025, please contact the Chief Electoral Officer as soon as possible.
