LIGHTS, CAMERA, CONFIDENCE: AKWESASNE’S FIRST MODEL BOOTCAMP CONCLUDES
Over the past month, a group of aspiring runway stars took their first confident steps into the world of modeling through the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Model Bootcamp, hosted by the Department of Economic Development. After weeks of hard work and hands-on training, participants wrapped up the program on Saturday, April 26, with a mock fashion show featuring the stunning designs of Stacey Mitchell.
Friends and family gathered to cheer on the graduates, who showcased their polished runway walks, graceful posing, and growing confidence. Throughout April, participants received expert instruction from Akwesasronon models Steevi King, Ryan King, and Steven Thompson, who were instrumental in building the skills — and self-assurance — of the next generation of Kanien’keha talent.
This free bootcamp also featured special sessions with makeup artists Tisha Thompson and Vanna White, along with skincare tips from medical aesthetician Amanda Wanamaker, helping participants feel their best both inside and out.
A special nia:wen/thank you goes out to all of our instructors and guest speakers for sharing their time, talent, and encouragement!
Economic Development Director Kylee Tarbell shared the following about the growing potential of creative industries for Indigenous communities:
“The entertainment industry; from modeling and film to music and digital content creation, has become one of our fastest-growing sectors, with more and more opportunities emerging for Indigenous people, including here in Akwesasne. As these doors continue to open, it’s important that we prepare our people not only with the skills to succeed but also with the awareness and understanding of the risks that can come with working in this field. Through training sessions like our Introduction to Modeling course, we are helping to build confidence, promote professionalism, and encourage safe practices. Our goal is to ensure that Akwesasronon can engage in these industries with the knowledge, support, and cultural grounding needed to thrive while upholding values of respect and empowerment.”
