COMMUNITY CELEBRATION DINNER HONOURS GRAND CHIEF ABRAM BENEDICT AND KANA:TAKON DISTRICT CHIEF TIM “DOOLEY” THOMPSON

On Friday, July 12, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne hosted a community celebration to honour Grand Chief Abram Benedict’s recent election as the Ontario Regional Chief. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone as Chief Benedict becomes the first Haudenosaunee individual to ever be appointed to this prestigious position. Chief Benedict’s time with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne spans 18 years, including nine years as Grand Chief and an additional nine years as a Kawehno:ke District chief. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd, with attendees sharing funny stories and cherished memories.

 

The event’s guest speakers included former Six Nations Grand Chief and close friend to Chief Benedict, Ava Hill, Chief Yvette Matansinine of the Animibiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek, who nominated Benedict for the role of Regional Chief, and Loretta Landmesser, Director of Canada Border Service Agency’s Indigenous Affairs Secretariat. Their presence and speeches added a special touch to the evening.

 

The celebration featured a traditional meal, heartfelt speeches, and meaningful gifts. Grand Chief Benedict was presented with a symbolic blanket from the current council. The blanket’s colours transitioned from purple and white, representing the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, to red, symbolizing the Chiefs of Ontario and his new role. Throughout the evening, council members and guests shared inspiring words, funny stories and reflected on his contributions and leadership.

 

A notable highlight was the surprise celebration for Kana:takon District Chief Tim “Dooley” Thompson, who played a key role in organizing the event. Council honoured him with a quilt and kind words in recognition of his retirement. Thompson, who previously served as MCA Grand Chief and held numerous terms as Kana:takon District chief, was visibly moved by the heartfelt tributes. Chief Thompson, along with his signature hat, will be fondly missed by the Council.

 

The evening concluded with warm congratulations to both Chief Benedict and Chief Thompson. As Grand Chief Benedict steps into his new role as Regional Chief and Chief Thompson begins his well-deserved retirement, please join us in congratulating them and wishing them the best in their future endeavours.
