EMERGENCY PLANNING UNDERWAY FOR RARE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and Mohawk Council of Akwesasne are working together to share information with the community and plan for any potential emergencies related to the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse.

The eclipse event will last approximately two hours from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., with totality (full eclipse, total darkness) lasting just a few minutes at 3:25 p.m.

The Adirondack Mountains and Akwesasne are both situated within the “path of totality.” The Adirondack Park is expecting thousands of visitors to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime event from the mountaintops. Akwesasne could also see a large influx of visitors, especially traffic passing through to the mountain regions.

The SRMT and MCA emergency operations staff, police, communications, and other programs and agencies have met to begin emergency planning as a proactive and precautionary measure.

We advise the community and public of the following safety reminders:

TOTAL ECLIPSE SAFETY REMINDERS

  • Do not look directly at the sun without proper solar eclipse eyewear throughout the eclipse period, as this can cause eye damage and medical emergencies.
  • Plan for traffic delays, especially if you’re planning to view in the Adirondacks. Have food, water, medications, and emergency gear in your vehicle.
  • Plan for potential cell phone disruptions in the event that cell phone towers become overloaded.
  • Avoid roadside viewing. We are encouraging community members to view the eclipse from home or from a safe, designated area to avoid accidents.
  • Finally, safely enjoy this significant event and moment in history!
