FEDERAL INDIAN DAY SCHOOL CLASS ACTION — COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE SESSIONS
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is inviting all former students of the Federal Indian Day Schools to attend a Community Assistance Session facilitated by the class counsel Gowling WLG. The assistance sessions will take place on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Turtle Room at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena; a second session will take place at 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Iohahi:io Akwesasne Education & Training Institute.
Community members who wish to complete a claim form during these times are asked to bring a form of government identification (Certificate of Indian Status, Driver’s License, Social Insurance Number card, etc.). One-on-one 30-minute sessions with a Gowling WLG representative will take place during the assistance sessions. To schedule an appointment, please contact the Aboriginal Rights and Research Office at 613-575-2250 ext. 2206. The deadline to set up an appointment is Friday, February 28 at 5:00 p.m.
Class members can pick up a claim form at the MCA Admin. #1 Building (A-Frame), Kanonhkwa’tsheri:io reception desk, Akwesasne Justice Department, Office of Vital Statistics at CIA #3 (pick-up only), Mohawk Government Building #1 and the Aboriginal Rights and Research Office at MG #2. Class members have until July 13, 2022, to complete and submit a claim form for compensation.
For support with the claim process, class members can contact the claims call center at 1-888-221-2898. They will be given the option to seek support from the administrator on submitting a claim or legal support and help filling out the Claim Form from Class Counsel.
