MCA & AMPS INVESTIGATING DISCOVERY OF CASKET AND REMAINS NEAR CEMETERY
On August 18, 2022, a community volunteer group cleaning the St. Lawrence Cemetery in the village of Kana:takon discovered a casket in the weeds which has human remains inside. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service were notified, and assistance was requested from a local funeral home for properly handling.
The funeral home determined that the casket and remains have been in place for several years.
The Akwesasne Mohawk Police are investigating to determine the identity of the person. Once proper identification is made the casket will be properly buried.
