MCA ECDEV STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY PRESENCE AT WORLD JUNIORS

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is pleased to highlight the remarkable efforts of the Department of Economic Development in fostering community involvement with the 2025 World Junior Hockey Championships. The team worked diligently in collaboration with Hockey Canada to ensure that Akwesasne was meaningfully represented and engaged at this prestigious event.

One of the key accomplishments was the successful organization of the Ticket Donation Program, which allocated 150 tickets to local youth organizations, such as the Akwesasne Minor Hockey Association and the Cornwall Typhoons. These tickets allowed young athletes and community members to attend the Latvia vs. USA game, providing them with an unforgettable experience and inspiring future generations.

MCA Economic Development also played a key role at the Fan Fest, hosting a booth that welcomed attendees. This initiative offered a valuable opportunity to showcase Akwesasne’s culture and hospitality to visitors from around the world.

In addition, Economic Development staff were actively involved in recommending Indigenous artists to contribute to the championships. Their input helped select artists who designed game MVP awards, signature jerseys, and a commemorative mural, ensuring Indigenous representation was at the forefront of the event. MCA Grand Chief Leonard Lazore had the honor of presenting the Player of the Game award during the bronze medal game, while Chief Greg Sarazin of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan presented the Player of the Game award during the gold medal game.

The team also collaborated with the MCA Communications Unit to create a land acknowledgment video and a welcome message featuring Tsi Snaihne District Chief Tesha Rourke. This work emphasized Akwesasne’s connection to the event and the recognition of its territory.

Kawehno:ke District Chief and Economic Development Portfolio Holder Vanessa Adams noted, “We are proud of the work done by the Economic Development team. Through their dedication and collaboration, Akwesasne was prominently represented on the international stage. We thank the Department of Economic Development for their incredible effort in bringing our community together for this prestigious event.”

The MCA is deeply grateful to the Department of Economic Development team for their hard work and vision. Their contributions to the World Junior Hockey Championships not only strengthened Akwesasne’s presence but also created opportunities to celebrate our community and culture.

Congratulations to the Director of Economic Development and their staff for this tremendous achievement!
