MCA RECEIVES NOTIFICATION OF VARIANT OF CONCERN IN AKWESASNE
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Department of Health (DOH) is announcing that we have received confirmation from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) of a COVID-19 Variant of Concern (VOC) in the Jurisdiction of MCA. Public Health Ontario screens all positive samples for the presence of mutations in COVID-19 positive tests. Individuals who have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant have been in isolation and following Community Health guidelines.
COVID-19 variants are the mutations of the COVID-19 virus. These variants are known to be highly infectious and contagious. The incubation period for the variants can be shorter, causing rapid transmission. COVID-19 variants have occurred, as expected, due to the virus circulating in different areas and populations. The more circulation a virus has, the more opportunity it has to change/mutate. It is highly recommended to receive the COVID-19 vaccine when community vaccine clinics are announced.
With the COVID-19 variants being announced within the EOHU region, MCA’s Department of Health (DOH) is reminding community members to remain diligent in following public health measures: wearing a mask when in public, social distance up to 6-feet when outside your own household, washing/sanitizing hands frequently, and staying to your own household bubble.
