The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is deeply saddened by the passing of Assembly of Manitoba Grand Chief Cathy Merrick. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, Cross Lake, and the people of Manitoba who are mourning this sudden loss.

Grand Chief Merrick was a beacon of leadership and activism in her nation and Manitoba. As the first female elected Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, she set a powerful example, especially for young women. Her dedication to her people was evident as mourners gathered at vigils and events to honour her life.

As her nation prepares to say their final goodbyes and lay her to rest, we offer our deepest sympathies to all of Grand Chief Merrick’s loved ones. On behalf of the Akwesasne community, our hearts go out to you.
