Intake Dates For Secure Status Cards Scheduled For February 16-25

Akwesasne, ONTARIO — The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to inform all Akwesasronon that Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) are beginning to take applications for the new Secure Certificates of Indian Status, commonly known as Indian Status Cards. The current Status Cards will remain valid until their expiration date, but will not be accepted at land border crossings after June 2009.

INAC’s Mobile Application Center will process applications at the Cornwall Island Administration Building #3 on February 16-25 from 9am to 6pm. The Mobile Application Centre will be made available on Saturday and Sunday for community members who have an urgent need for the new Secure Indian Status Cards. Top priority will be given to people who use the Status Cards when crossing the border.

Those applying for a new Secure Indian Status Cards will be required to provide an original birth certificate and other Federal, Provincial or Territorial government-issued documentation. A driver’s license, old age security card, government issued employee card, other government issued I.D., student I.D with digitized photo of applicant, and passport will be accepted. Photocopies of birth certificates will not be accepted.

Parents must apply for children under the age of 16. Parents will be required to provide one form of acceptable identification and the child’s original birth certificate.

All applications must be completed in person. Community members unable to make the initial intake dates will be able to have their applications processed at Indian and Northern Affairs Canada’s Office in Ottawa. The Office of Vital Statistics will also be coordinating additional intake dates during the coming months.
