Akwesasne Mohawk Police Officers Commended For Involvement In Major Roundup Of Drug Traffickers
Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Issues Statement in Response to “Operation Cancun”
Enniskó:wa / March 28, 2008AKWESASNE, ONTARIO ─ The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) issued the following statement today in response to the March 26, 2008 dismantling of a criminal organization that was allegedly involved in drug trafficking through the territory of Akwesasne. Mohawk Officers of the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service were a pivotal part of the Aboriginal Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (A-CFSEU) in a major roundup known as “Operation Cancun.” Throughout the investigation, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service provided front-line information that led to the arrest of individuals involved in a criminal organization that smuggled drugs into New York State.
MCA Grand Chief Tim Thompson stated: “We’re proud of the involvement that the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service had during the investigation and the commendation that they’ve received as a professional First Nations Police Force. They continually strive to achieve the highest level of expertise and skill in serving the community of Akwesasne and are an integral part of joint investigations with surrounding law enforcement agencies. We anticipate that they will continue to play an important part in other investigations that lead to the future dismantling of any criminal organizations that take advantage of Akwesasne’s unique geographic location for illegal activity.
