Akwesasne, ONTARIO — Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Executive Director Sheree Bonaparte announced this morning that Jerry Swamp will serve as the new Chief of Police for the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service. Bonaparte was joined by members of Mohawk Council and the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Commission in making the announcement to a small gathering at the police station in Kanatakon.

“After a long search and months of interviews, I’m proud to announce that Swamp has accepted his new position,” stated Bonaparte. She noted that, “He has a long and distinguished career with the Mohawk Police Service and serves as an inspiration to his colleagues. He will provide the leadership necessary for the police department to continue moving forward.”

As the Chief of Police, Swamp will be responsible for overseeing the overall operation of the police department as it better serves and protects the community of Akwesasne and the surrounding areas. He will also be responsible for the continuation and development of positive arrangements for the enforcement of laws in a fair and unbiased manner.

“I’m proud that I will be able to serve my community and for the support that I have received,” said Swamp. He added, “Along with my fellow police officers, we will continue to place the public’s safety at the highest level.”

Swamp served as the Acting-Deputy Chief of Police and assisted the Acting-Chief of Police since former Police Chief Lewis Mitchell resigned in June 2008. He has been responsible for the department’s day-to-day operations and it’s participation in joint law enforcement initiatives.

Swamp assumed his responsibilities this morning and immediately began his responsibilities as the new Chief of Police.
