In operation since 1976, this program is keeps track of the contaminant research and sampling within the territory of Akwesasne. Studies and research are evaluated with the department’s unique understanding of the Mohawk Peoples and our community. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and other departments of MCA are advised about the contaminant levels in fish, animals, air, soil and the waters of the community. New compounds and new impacts are investigated and reported. This program also monitors the St. Lawrence River Remedial Action Plans and reports on their findings to the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.
Water has always been a main concern of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. In Akwesasne, we have every level of water and waste water treatment which is overseen by the Akwesasne Technical Services Department. The Water Program works with DTS and the Health Department to assure safe water for people and the environment. At present the Department, through the Water Program, is developing a unified Akwesasne Water Act that will integrate Source Water Protection, Drinking Water and Waste Water standards and procedures that can be used by the whole community of Akwesasne. Working with St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs, this Law will be the first of its kind in Canada or the United States.
