Working with our Partners

The Environment Program has many projects that are worked on with various partners within and outside of Akwesasne.  Internally we have close contact and communication with the following Departments and/ or Programs:

  • Department of Technical Services—environmental assessments for capital projects including infrastructure (waterlines and roads), subdivisions
  • Department of Housing—environmental assessments for construction of individual homes and/or multi-dwelling residential units
  • Economic Development—environmental assessments for construction of new and enhancement of existing economic endeavors with community members
  • Traditional Medicine—harvesting, transplantation and/or habitat protection for culturally sensitive species; advisory to Environment
  • Health Department—Lyme disease, West Nile virus, community health issues, residential fuel spills, septic and well installation advice for new and existing projects
  • Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Environment—joint community ventures through Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment
  • Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs—joint community environmental ventures through Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment; Nation to Nation environmental ventures through Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force; advisory to environment

Outside partners work with us on various projects; they may provide funding or in-kind services including training, field work, and equipment

  • Species at risk projects: Environment Canada Aboriginal Fund for Species at Risk, Canadian Wildlife Service, Parks Canada via Thousand Islands National Park, Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, South Nation Conservation Authority, Raisin Region Conservation Authority, Ministry of Environment, Saint Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Studies, Department of Fisheries and Oceans
  • Environmental Assessments: Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, Ministry of Transportation
  • Forestry: Ontario Professional Foresters Association, Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association, Eastern Ontario Model Forests
  • Thompson Island Youth Camp—Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force, Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment, SRMT Natural Resource Damage Program, community volunteers, Parks Canada
