Mohawk Council Observes Passing Of Former Kawehno:ke District Chief Antoine Delormier

It is with a heavy heart that the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has learned about the passing of former Kawehno:ke District Chief Antoine Delormier. Antoine went peacefully into the spirit world on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.

Chief Antoine Delormier was a respected community leader and valuable member of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, having served three (3) consecutive terms as a Kawehno:ke District Chief. He served from 1994-1997; 1997-2000; and 2000-2003. Although Chief Delormier no longer was in politics, he continued being an active community member. Antoine has been and will continue to be missed on Council. 

In observance of his passing, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne extends sincere condolences to his family, friends and to the community of Akwesasne for its loss. 

Kawehno:ke District Chief Louise Thompson, “ Antoine will be remembered for his political commitment to the return of our lands, his craftsmanship as he pounded logs for local basket makers, and his love and appreciation for the St. Lawrence River.”

As a courageous leader for Akwesasne, all MCA flags have been flown at ‘half-staff’ in remembrance of Antoine. The MCA Government Buildings (G & L Buildings 1 and 2 that house Grand Chief and Council, Mohawk Government, ARRO and Communications) will be closed Monday, November 30, 2015 to honor the former chief, and to allow current council members and staff to attend funeral services for Chief Delormier.  In addition, the Finance Office (located at Administrative Building #1), will be closed from 10AM-2PM in order for staff to attend the funeral.

Mohawk Government Office will reopen on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. The MCA Finance Office will reopen at 2PM on Monday, November 30, 2015.
