Grand Chief Responds To Letter Received From Akwesasne Police Association

On December 3, 2015, a letter that was directed to the attention of Grand Chief Abram Benedict was printed in Indian Times. Grand Chief and Council are advising the community of the following:
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) Grand Chief and members of the Public Safety portfolio met with the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) Commission Chair, Chief of Police and the MCA Executive Director to discuss the letter.
Council does not respond publicly to employee complaints and allegations, especially while the parties are currently bargaining their collective agreement. The Grand Chief and Council can assure AMPS officers, staff and the community that Council and the Police Commission takes allegations of misconduct seriously. Appropriate measures to investigate complaints and grievances in accordance with our established policies and procedures are being taken.
We are confident that the Police Service is maintaining the highest level of professionalism and accountability within the Service.
