MCA Seeking Community Input On Draft Renewable Energy Strategy: A Strategic Plan

Enniska/ February 29, 2016

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is pleased to present to you the draft Renewable Energy Strategy: A Strategic Plan. This draft Strategic Plan was created with the intention that Akwesasne will become a leader in incorporating energy efficiencies, renewable energy and microgrid technologies to meet the community’s future energy needs in a culturally responsible way. Council is seeking community input on this draft prior to being finalized.

For the past 20 years, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has been actively studying energy options to help meet community needs. Since 1993, eleven (11) energy studies have been completed to provide a solid baseline of information.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne identified four strategic objectives that will shape the work of the departments and programs over the next three years. These include: 1) Sustainability; 2)Self-determination 3)Well-being; and 4) Modernization. The draft Renewable Energy Strategy is being developed to help MCA fulfill its four Strategic objectives and ensuring that the principles that underlie the community’s Traditional Teachings are inter-woven.

The MCA is working on a number of initiatives to take a leadership role on renewable energies. Within the draft Strategic Plan, Community Energy Planning, the Aboriginal Conservation Program, Mohawk Electric Cooperative, 20/20 Catalyst Program and the Renewable Energy Project as well as a Financial Assessment are explained.

Please read the draft Renewable Energy Strategy: A Strategic Plan in order to gain a better insight on how Council is planning on meeting the community’s energy needs responsibility, economically and ensuring that the Haudenosaunee Traditional teachings, which emphasize our responsibility to live in peace and harmony with the natural world, are respected. Please come to upcoming General and District Meetings in order to provide input on the Strategic Plan.
