NON-INSURED HEALTH BENEFITS PROVIDES UPDATE TO COMMUNITY ON BENEFITS COVERAGE

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Non-Insured Health Benefits Program (NIHB) is providing an update to the community on what the program is able to provide coverage for, and what they are unable to provide. The NIHB reminds the community that the program is not a substitute for provincial health plan coverage. A valid health card and status card number are required for all services available. 

To be eligible for coverage, you must have the following (no exceptions):

  • Registered with the Mohawks of Akwesasne
  • Be a resident of Canada
  • Possess a valid provincial health card (OHIP, RAMQ/QHIP, etc.)

NIHB can provide coverage for the following:

Vision Care

  • Eyeglasses that are prescribed by a vision care professional
  • Eye Examinations

Frequency Guideline

  • 1-17yrs & 65yrs + will be covered for one (1) frame per year
  • 18-64 years old will be covered for one (1) frame every two years (2)

Dental Care

  • Preventative services: polishing, scaling, exams, radiographs (x-rays)
  • Restorative services: fillings, crowns
  • Orthodontic services: braces (0-17 year olds)
  • Dentures, extractions, root canal treatments

Pharmacy Benefits

  • Exception drugs

Steps for Exception Drugs

  1. Obtain prescription from healthcare provider
  2. Go the pharmacist to get your prescription filled. The pharmacist will contact NIHB directly to obtain approval.
  3. NIHB will process approval and your pharmacist will contact you when the decision is made

Medical Supplies and Equipment

  • Pressure garments and compression stockings
  • Medical supplies (dressings, bandages, etc.)
  • Medical equipment (walkers, crutches, etc.)
  • Orthotics and custom footwear
  • Oxygen supplies and equipment
  • Hearing aids

Services that are NOT Covered

  • US/American medical bills
  • Dental implants
  • Medical marijuana
  • Fertility medications
  • Weight loss medications
  • Benefits that are covered under federal or provincial health cards
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Transportation for personal errands
  • Vehicle repairs/home renovations
  • Claims submitted to NIHB after one year from the date of service or purchase
