ORANGE SHIRT DAY

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, in collaboration with the Native North American Travelling College, the City of Cornwall, Children’s Aid Society, and Akwesasronon Sonatanoron, invites the community to join for a day of reflection, learning, and cultural celebration in honor of Orange Shirt Day. The event will take place at Lamoureux Park in Cornwall, ON, on September 30, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The day will open and close with the Ohen:ton Karihwatekwen, followed by welcoming introductions and an explanation of the purpose of the gathering. A Haudenosaunee Social will take place, along with speakers sharing residential school experiences, Inuit throat singing, resilience stories, and displays of traditional crafts.

In addition, there will be vendors, free food (including hot dogs courtesy of the Cornwall Kinettes), cultural displays, and more speakers.

Vendors selling Indigenous-made items are welcome at no cost! To register, please contact Carolyn Francis at carolyn.francis@akwesasne.ca or Julia Benedict at julia.benedict@akwesasne.ca. We also encourage volunteers to sign up by contacting Nova Cook at nova.cook@cwcas.ca.

We hope to see you there as we reflect and honor the legacy of residential school survivors.
