Akwesasne Mohawk Police Commission

Overview

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Commission (AMPC) is comprised of two members from each of the Districts of Tsi Snaihne, Kana:takon and Kawehno:ke. The members are appointed to 3-year terms by a resolution passed by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA).

The current members of the Police Commission representing the District of Kana:takon are Valerie (Francis) Terrance and Johanne Jackson. For the District of Tsi Snaihne, the representatives are Sheila Adams and Rachel George. In the District of Kawehno:ke, the representative is Wesley Benedict. Currently, there is an open seat for a representative from Kawehno:ke. A Chairperson is selected by the members of the AMPC and the current Chair is Wesley Benedict.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Commission is to oversee and ensure that the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services provides community oriented policing services that are sensitive to the needs and culture of the people of Akwesasne and provides all people with protection to enjoy their lawful activities and customs. The Police Commission shall, in partnership with the people of Akwesasne provide a policing service that:

(a) promotes public peace, well-being and security;

(b) promotes the prevention and detection of crime;

(d) promotes and supports community policing.

POWERS, DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

The Police Commission shall be the governing authority for the AMPS and be subject to the Charter and any specific provisions in any Akwesasne Code, Law, or Regulation, or the Standard Operating Procedures for AMPS adopted by the MCA, as well as any specific provisions in Agreements. Public Complaint forms are available in the lobby of the police station. Complaints made against individual officers should be directed to the Chief of Police.

The Police Commission will receive and address complaints made against the Chief of Police and/or the Police Service as a whole. Anyone wishing to submit a concern or complaint to the Police Commission can do so in writing and send or drop off to the address: Box 10, 73 Sweetgrass Lane, Akwesasne, Quebec, H0M 1A0.

The AMPC meets regularly on the second Monday of every month in the AMPS station boardroom in Kana:takon. These meetings are not open to the public.
